PIP Breast Implants Recall

PIP Breast Implants Recall Solicitors Ireland

Lavelle Coleman Solicitors' experienced Medical Negligence Group is representing a large number of women with breast implants recalled by manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).

A recall of these faulty implants was initiated in Ireland on 30 March 2010 after it was discovered that PIP had been using unauthorised silicone gel, such as that found in mattresses, instead of a more expensive, medical-grade silicone gel. The nature of the irritant gel used within makes removal of ruptured implants a more complex and extensive surgery.

Approximately 1,500 Irish patients were implanted with these products. We understand that the recalled PIP implants that were used in Ireland were for aesthetic purposes only and not for reconstructive surgery for breast cancer patients. The breast implants were implanted in the following Private Hospitals / Clinics Shandon Street Hospital in Cork, Clane Hospital in Co Kildare, The Harley Medical Clinic in Dublin, The Hospital Group (Dublin and Galway) and were not used in Public Hospitals.

The IMB have stated that out of the 1,500 women in Ireland who have received the PIP breast implants, 878 of them are former patients of the Harley Medical Group.

The Irish Medicines Board continues to advise women with these implants that if they have any concerns about their breasts or implants that they should seek immediate clinical advice from their implanting surgeon.

There is still some ambiguity surrounding the health risks associated with the implant. Many women who have received breast implants may not even be sure if they have received a PIP implant.

What should you do if you think you may have received a PIP Breast Implant?

Any woman who is concerned or experiences adverse symptoms should:

  • Contact your surgeon immediately to discuss their options
  • Write to your originating clinic to request a copy of your medical records
  • Have a scan to determine whether there is any weakening or rupture of the implant

We appreciate that this is a sensitive issue and that many recipients of the implant are distressed at the thought of having to undergo further operations.

Our dedicated Solicitors are working with women affected by the PIP implant to provide them with the best possible legal redress and to ensure they achieve proper access to justice.

We are happy to meet with you and provide you with a free consultation to explore the legal options available to you and to discuss any potential compensation claim you may have arising out of receiving a PIP Breast Implant.
